U’s ‘keeper speaks ahead of Salford.

14 April 2023

Colchester United goalkeeper, Tom Smith, has spoken ahead of the trip to Salford on Saturday and says that the U’s are full of confidence following their 4-0 victory over Crewe Alexandra.

Tom Smith made his U’s debut last weekend following an injury that Kieran O’Hara sustained during the warm-up. The twenty-one-year-old was put into the starting line up half an hour before kick off and was a big part of the side, helping the squad.

Smith talks about his relationship with Kieran O’Hara and how the two push each other to be better, and also about how the U’s are confident about bringing their good form up to Manchester.

“I didn’t touch the ball for the first twenty minutes! I was on the edge of my box thinking ‘someone just give it to me.’ It was great, we sort of needed that in the last few weeks, we’ve had a lot of draws, a lot of nearly’s so it was good to firstly, score a lot of goals, get over the line and have another clean sheet. It was great and the team are over the moon with it.

“That’s the job of a number two, number three goalkeeper, you want to push him, and get better than him, and he does the same, so it’s just a constant cycle throughout the season. Kieran [O’Hara] and I have a great relationship, I’d probably say I speak to him the most out of everyone in the squad because we work together every day, and when he did get injured, I came into the dressing room and he sat with me, keeping me calm before the game so, really good relationship and in training we push each other, and it helps the team.

“we’re five games unbeaten now and coming into the game off of a 4-0 win, we can take the confidence into Saturday to really push and get another few wins and get the results, so everyone’s really confident.”
