U's Grab Egbo

Manny signs from Charlton

15 August 2023

Colchester United have signed Mandela Egbo.

The right back, who turns twenty six on Thursday, has signed a two year deal that will keep him in north Essex until the summer of 2025.

He signed from the Addicks on Monday morning, for an undisclosed fee, and is expected to be in the U's squad for the game against AFC Wimbledon on Tuesday night.

After starting his football career in the Crystal Palace Academy, he moved to Germany to play for Borussia Monchengladbach and Darmstadt.

His next move saw him cross the Atlantic, with a move to New York Red Bulls in January 2020.

Two years later, he joined Swindon Town halfway through their promotion chasing season under Ben Garner, before following him to Charlton in the summer of 2022.

He told the official website that it's a bonus for the man in charge to have faith in him, but first he said how much he is looking forward to his time at the U's.

"It’s been good to be in the building, I’ve met the lads, the Gaffer and the coaching staff and I’m really looking forward to getting started.

"Games are coming almost twice a week at the moment so there’s lots of time to get involved and integrate, get to know the boys and the style of play as soon as possible.

"It’s nice of course to know you’re coming somewhere you’re wanted.

"I’ve known the Gaffer for a long time, I know how he works and how he wants his teams to play and set up and hopefully, it will be a smooth transition in that sense."

Mandela, who is also happy going by the name of Manny, will take the number eighteen shirt for the U's  - if you want to sponsor his kit, get in touch with Ben Conway on ben.conway@colchesterunited.net or 01206 755107.
