The U’s defender has enjoyed regular game time since arriving in North Essex on loan from Leyton Orient and has become an important member of Matt Bloomfield’s side.
Wing-back, Connor Wood, speaks ahead of what could be a record-breaking weekend for the U’s with the chance to win six away matches in a row, for the first time in the clubs history. It’s a long trip up the A1 for the side and Wood has spoken about how to prepare for a long journey so soon after playing a game on Tuesday.
The defender feels ready to take on Carlisle but has not underestimated their quality. He states that the U’s are extremely keen to keep this run going and want to take it game by game from now until the end of the season.
Wood has also spoken about life at Colchester United since joining and how he believes that Matt Bloomfield’s systems play to his strengths as a wing-back and allows him to get forward.
“The main thing is preparing our bodies for the long journey, we’ve got a game of football to play on Saturday, we need to get in that mindset because with a game on Tuesday, Saturday comes around quite quickly so you’ve got to recover well on Wednesday and Thursday, get your head set on the game Friday and get through that long journey.
“Everyone’s really confident, we just want to keep this momentum going, not think too much about any games ahead and just take it game by game from now until the end of the season and just pick up as many points as we can. Carlisle is a tough place to go, it’s obviously got the journey and also they’re fairly resilient and a good, organised team at home, we know it’s going to be a tough game but we’ve got the quality one hundred percent and the work ethic to go there and pick up three points so we’re really looking forward to it.
“I’m loving it here, I’ve loved it since the moment I’ve stepped in and got the opportunity to start and be back on the pitch again. It had been quite a while since I played so, it’s been really good to be back out there playing and to keep my space and I’m really enjoying the wingback role, especially with the way the gaffer’s got us playing, it gives us a lot of freedom and gives me plenty of the ball and gets me into attacking areas a lot which is what I enjoy but I think there’s a great balance within the team and that’s why the formation works with us.
