U’s boss speaks ahead of Rochdale AFC

13 January 2023

The Colchester United Head Coach, Matt Bloomfield, has spoken about a busy week and a half in the transfer window, and preparations for Rochdale on Saturday.

The U’s have played two games so far in 2023, winning them both, one against play off chasing Swindon Town, and the second was against Harrogate Town. The side will look to continue this run against Rochdale on Saturday who managed to get themselves one point out of the relegation zone following their Tuesday night victory over Bradford.

Matt Bloomfield has pointed out that Colchester United aren’t the only team strengthening their squad early on in the transfer window and that he’s been watching been watching our next opponents intently.

“We’ve been working really, really hard over a number of weeks now, to make sure we had player in place, and I think the guys have done a fantastic job… [when talking about Matt Jay and Connor Hall] from our side we were just trying to work as diligently and as hard as we possibly could over a number of weeks. Usually, these things find a way of getting out but those two didn’t which was nice. We don’t really want to do our work publicly; we like to do it as privately as we possibly can.

“They’ve both played to a good level for a number of years now, obviously both got promoted out of the division in recent years, so we know the qualities that they’re going to bring bot on and off the pitch. I can say they’re both really good people who want to do well, who want to keep progressing, who want to keep their careers moving forwards. Obviously different circumstances with Connor being in Cambridge and Matt having to move

“I sat and watched the game last night, Bradford vs Rochdale, I thought Rochdale were very good, I must admit, I thought they were full of energy, I thought they had an attacking threat, they were solid, they’ve changed shape. So, we’ve looked at that as well, they were playing four at the back until last night [Tuesday] so we’ve prepared for both, we sat and watched that, so we’re ready for both, we’ve done our research and like you say everyone is strengthening.”
