Junior Wins EFL Young Player Award

U's defender voted best young player in January

8 March 2023

Junior Tchamadeu has been named the EFL's Young Player of the Month.

The U's defender has picked up the accolade for January after several stellar performances.

Nineteen-year-old Junior played every minute of every game for Colchester throughout January, as the U’s collected thirteen points from a possible eighteen – a run that also saw Matt Bloomfield pick up the Manager of the Month trophy.

Junior also bagged goals in the consecutive wins over Harrogate Town and Rochdale, with the latter also earning him the winner for the club’s goal of the month competition.

After getting the news, Junior said: "Looking back, it was a very good month for me personally, with being in the starting line-up regularly, performing well and getting a couple of goals as well."

"But I'd never have won it on my own though, it was a real team effort with the other lads in the squad and Matt Bloomfield and the staff. I'm grateful to every one of them that has helped me get this."

On his goals, he added: "Playing wing-back enables me to get forward more and join in attacks."

"I've done a lot of work in the past few months on my positioning higher up the pitch, and that has allowed me to be in the right places on more occasions and to score goals."

Making his debut at just sixteen-years-old, Tchamadeu has quickly established himself as one of the brightest prospects at the club, notching up eighty appearances in blue and white stripes.

His performances also saw him collect last season’s LFE Apprentice of the Season for League Two award.
