Sears Wins PFA Community Champion 22/23

Freddie recognised for support of Community Foundation

22 May 2023

Colchester United PFA Community Champion has been awarded to Freddie Sears for the 2022/23 season. Freddie Sears along with the U’s squad have been supporting Community Foundation projects throughout the season across all strands of work (Participation, Education and Health & Inclusion).

This season the squad have contributed to community projects on 87 official engagements.

Freddie Sears was recognised by Colchester United Community Foundation staff for his support of the Boys development Centre programmes, attending regularly to support sessions and interact with the young players who are part of the club’s talent pathway.

Freddie shared: ”I’m delighted to have been nominated and to have received the PFA Community Champion Award from the Community Foundation staff. Having seen first-hand the great work they do within the Boys Development Centre programme and many other programmes within the community, these guys do a great job every day impacting people’s lives in a positive way!”

The Colchester United Community Foundation have also been working closely alongside the club’s U18 Scholars this past season, supporting the U’s youngsters with their UEFA C License. Throughout the season players from the Youth Team have been coming to Shrub End to work alongside Community Foundation coaches on our girl’s pathway, coaching the future U’s female stars!

Rick Goldsbrough, Head of Community said: “To work alongside the Colchester United first team players, U23’s and U18’s this season to support our engagement within the community has been very impactful. Whether this has been within our football environments, visiting local schools or engaging with our tagged groups through our health and inclusion work, the players have brought many smiles to many faces. A big thank you to Freddie Sears for his support of our boys’ pathways and a huge well done on being recognised for his PFA Community Champion award. Another thanks goes to the club captains Tommy Smith and Luke Chambers for their support of the Community Foundation throughout the season.”

The U’s player engagement is supported by the Professional Football’s Association (PFA) who support players at clubs all over the country in engaging with fans and their communities - https://www.thepfa.com/players/community
