Colchester looking to bounce back from two consecutive defeats

13 October 2023

Colchester United will travel to the Cotswolds on Saturday 14th October to face Forest Green Rovers in their Sky Bet League Two clash (KO 3pm).

Ben Garner’s side will be looking to get back to winning ways following defeats to Newport and Morecambe.

The U’s currently sit 21st in the league table having amassed ten points from eleven games. Their last victory came in the thrilling encounter against Notts County at the JobServe Community Stadium that finished 5-4 on the last day of September.

The Opposition

Forest Green Rovers have lost their last six league matches and are currently sitting at the bottom of the table with seven points.

Out of their twelve matches in this campaign, they won two, drew one and lost nine. The Gloucestershire-based side haven’t registered a league win since 2nd September when they beat Sutton United by a goal to nil.

In their most recent fixtures, they were defeated by the likes of Crewe, Doncaster, Notts County, Morecambe, and Stockport.

Last time out in the league, the Rovers succumbed to a 2-1 away defeat to Accrington. They did, however, beat Walsall on penalties in their EFL Trophy Clash on Tuesday.

Speaking ahead of their clash with Colchester, Forest Green’s manager, David Horseman, praised his team’s spirit during the Walsall game adding that his players showed “some good intensity”.

“I was delighted to see us, particularly in the first-half, chasing, tackling, coming from all sides, counter pressing quick. There were a couple of moments where we did that, and we played forward fast and attacked quick. We looked a really good side,” Horseman said.

He added: “[After the game], there was a lot more of an upbeat feel. We don’t feel like we’ve cracked it, but we feel like that’s a small step in the right direction against a decent Walsall team. It’s something we can build on.”

The Rovers will be relying on a couple of players to put in a good performance. One of them is Troy Deeney.

The experienced striker has featured in every single league game for Forest Green since he joined them in the second half of August. So far in this campaign, the thirty-five-year-old has five goal contributions, most notably including a hat-trick against Notts County.

Another player, the U’s will have to look out for is Mathew Stevens. The twenty-five-year-old forward has already netted four times this season, featuring in every single league game so far. He was on the scoresheet in Forest Green Rovers’ last league game against Accrington.

Last Time We Met

There wasn’t much that separated the two sides when they last met on 21st March 2022. Forest Green’s Matty Stevens grabbed the game’s only goal after nine minutes of playing time securing a victory for the visitors at the JobServe Community Stadium.
