Safer Internet Day 2024

21 February 2024

As part of the Colchester United Community Foundation's ongoing commitment to empowering young individuals, Luke Drysdale as a part of our funded Premier League Primary Stars programme had the opportunity to extend our reach beyond the realm of sports and into the vital domain of digital literacy.

Visiting Roach Vale Primary School on Safer Internet Day, we aimed to equip Year 6 students with essential knowledge and skills for navigating the digital landscape responsibly.

Our presentation, delivered in collaboration with the school, focused on engaging students in discussions and activities that fostered critical thinking and awareness about online safety. From exploring the intended audience of online content to deciphering the tactics used by apps and websites to capture attention, we encouraged students to approach their online interactions with caution and discernment.

Here is feedback from Mrs Wright, the class teacher:

“The presentation was really engaging. All the children took part. It was interesting looking at the section about who online content is created for and how you can be lured into apps and websites.”

As ambassadors for digital literacy and advocates for youth empowerment, we remain committed to leveraging platforms such as Premier League Primary Stars Safer Internet Day to instil confidence and resilience in young individuals as they navigate the complexities of the digital world. Through initiatives like this, facilitated by Colchester United Community Foundation, we can continue to make strides towards creating a safer and more informed online community for all.

Luke Drysdale, Colchester United Community Foundation’s Premier League Primary Stars Officer reflected on the workshop, “We recently hosted a Safer Internet Day Workshop at Roach Vale Primary School. The school shared with us that they had been facing challenges with the older pupils around how they had been using the internet.  As part of Premier League Primary Stars, we hosted an hour-long workshop, so that pupils could gain a better understanding how their actions online impact others. It also showcased the world of AI and how content can be edited to influence their thoughts and behaviours. The pupils engaged extremely well and left with a better understanding of how to use and engage with content online.”

If you would like support beyond PPA and PE with quality resources and provided by the Premier League and created in conjunction with the UK Safer Internet Centre and Childnet, please email cfeducation@colchesterunited.net to book a call or a meeting.
