U21s Report| U’s Defeated By Sheffield United

Colchester 2-3 Sheffield United

10 May 2024

Colchester United U21s were taking on Sheffield United in their last match of the 2023-24 campaign at the JobServe Community Stadium.

Liam Bailey named a familiar starting eleven with the likes of Oscar Thorn, Archie Oliver, Hakeem Sandah, and Frankie Terry all coming out for the first forty-five minutes.

The visitors began the match well, dominating possession in midfield, but it was the U’s who should have gone ahead with ten minutes gone when Oscar Thorn sprinted down the right flank before delivering a low cross, which should have been converted by one of the trialists – the ball, however, missed the post by a few inches.

Sheffield United were luckier sixteen minutes later when a misplaced pass from Collins was intercepted by Ryan One who eventually shot from the edge of the box and converted.

Nonetheless, it didn’t take long for the U’s to get back on level terms with Kaleel Green finding the equaliser just before the half-hour mark. A trialist’s shot from the edge of the box was spilled by Faxon in goal with Green alert in the five-yard box getting his foot in and putting the ball over the line.

Colchester had no plans to stop and went ahead through an unbelievable goal from Hakeem Sandah. With two minutes to go in the first half, the midfielder aimed from twenty-five yards and fired a bullet that nestled in the top right corner of the net.

This meant that Bailey’s men went in at half-time leading by two goals to one.

Sheffield United began the second forty-five minutes well and should have been level after less than two minutes, having created a couple of great chances. The first effort was denied by Collins in goal, with the second stinging the crossbar.

Both teams then settled back into the match with chances few and scarce and with energy draining, Bailey opted for some changes with a trialist and Max Jolliffe replacing Ryan Lowe and Oscar Thorn.

Unfortunately for the U’s, the substitutions had little effect and the visitors got back on level terms with ten minutes to go. Louie Marsh sprinted into the box before shooting from an angle and beating Collins.

Sheffield then began to dominate and went ahead through Sachdev who shot from sixteen yards with the ball scraping through Collin’s legs.

As much as the U’s tried to get back into the match, there just wasn’t enough time with Bailey’s men succumbing to a defeat on the last day of the season.
