The bank holiday tradition continued in high style on 31st August as U’s mascot Eddie The Eagle alongside Essex’s mascots gathered at Epsom Racecourse for the annual Mascot Derby.
The Mascot Derby is a bank holiday tradition for all mascots to create non-stop entertainment and energy and have a fantastic display of local rivalry—all in support of a truly vital cause.
Together, the mascot community raised over £8,000 for The Children's Trust, providing essential support for children with brain injury and neurodisabilities.
While mascots traveled from every corner of the country to compete, all eyes were on the hard-fought Essex derby. Eddie put in a massive physical shift down the stretch, digging deep to hold off fierce competition from local rivals Sammy Shrimp and Buddy Boar.
Eddie's tireless effort earned him 12th place overall in a crowded national field and secured him the ultimate local bragging rights: the official Essex Football Mascots Crown.
This year’s overall Epsom Mascot Derby title went to Brig Cat, representing Bamber Bridge FC, who led the pack across the finish line.
Congratulations to Brig Cat, all the incredible mascots who took part, and everyone who donated to make the fundraiser such a resounding success. Most of all, a huge well done to Eddie for bringing the Essex crown home!
