Colchester United lost 2-0 away to Bristol Rovers on Tuesday evening.
In their first midweek League Two fixture of the 2026/27 season, the U’s fell to goals by Tom James and Ellis Harrison in a physical battle in the West Country.
Danny and Nicky Cowley made three changes to the side that beat Rochdale at the weekend with Frankie Terry, Paul Digby, and Jaden Williams coming into the starting 11. Thimothée Lo-Tutala remained in goal, Terry, Jack Tucker, and Sean Raggett formed a back three, Ellis Iandolo, Paul Digby, Jack Payne, and Rob Hunt across midfield, and Harry Anderson, Oscar Thorn, and Jaden Williams in attack.
Lo-Tutala sprang into action in the opening minutes, rushing off his line to collect a dangerous ball through to Rovers’ Bobby Kamwa.
The hosts enjoyed most of the ball in the early stages. Kamwa and Shaq Forde proved a threat while finding space to come inside and attempt a shot.
The Gas found their goal after some sustained pressure around the U’s box. As Digby cleared away a cross with a header, James was positioned well to run onto the loose ball and volley a shot through bodies into the bottom-right corner of the net.
Iandolo thought he had found an equaliser with a glancing header just minutes later after Payne delivered a curling cross, but the referee blew for a foul in the box as it was taken.
Despite the U’s holding firm after conceding, Rovers continued to press for a second goal. Lo-Tutala was forced into action multiple times before the break, including to stop a thunderous half-volley by Richie Smallwood from outside his area.
Following substitutions of Kane Vincent-Young and Moses Sesay to replace Terry and Digby at half-time, the U’s enjoyed a fast start.
With Vincent-Young doing well to drive into midfield and release Thorn on the right, the winger drove into the box and played a pass across to Anderson. The attacker seemed certain to tap the ball home, but Rovers’ substitute Ciarán Kelly blocked the shot bravely from six yards out.
Moments later, Sesay, adding youthful energy into midfield, ventured forward with the ball and put a shot agonisingly wide of the left upright.
The U’s had to show their mettle as the half progressed. With the pressure piling, Vincent-Young stopped an acrobatic effort by Kamwa and both Tucker and Thorn called into action as the hosts repeatedly sent the ball into the U’s box.
Rovers came close to their second in the closing stages, but Lo-Tutala was quick to react and stop a low shot by Gas substitute Ellis Harrison inside the box.
In search of an equaliser, the Cowleys sent on Bradley Ihionvien, Leon Chiwome, and new signing Kylian Kouassi, but the striking trio, along with the rest of the team, could not break down the stubborn Bristol Rovers defence.
In the dying minutes of the match, Col U were caught on the counter attack and Harrison was played through to slot the ball past Lo-Tutala to double The Gas’ lead and seal the three points.
With the defeat to Bristol Rovers marking the first time the U’s have failed to pick up points in League Two so far this season, the squad will need to pick themselves up and look ahead to another away fixture as Danny, Nicky and the team travel to Swindon Town on Saturday.
