Central midfielder Dominic Gape joined Colchester United on a free transfer ahead of the 25/26 season and brought veteran leadership to the midfield. His high-energy tactics decimate his opponents’ plat and recycles the ball to provide support and guidance to his fellow teammates as a “senior pro”.
Gape’s youth career started at Southampton Academy at age 7 in 1994. During his time at Southampton Academy, he played and captained for the U18 team.
He made his appearance in the first-team squad in 2012, as an unused substitute in a League Cup against Sheffield Wednesday on 25th September 2012. He made progress by signing his first professional contract in 2013 however, a string of illnesses and injuries impeded his future endeavours throughout the 2013-14 season.
Despite this, on 20th December 2014, he made his only Premier League appearance as an 89th-minute substitute for Shane Long in a 3-0 victory over Everton.
August 2016 rolled in and Gape moved on loan for the first time, signing to Wycombe Wanderers and scored his first goal for Wycombe in a 5-1 win over Crewe Alexandra on 27th September 2016. On 7th January 2017, he signed a two-and-a-half permanent deal with Wycombe, and continued to score for the team. He scored the winning goal in a 2-1 victory against Chesterfield, which sealed Wycombe automatic promotion to League One for the 2018-19 season.
In May 2019, a new contract with Wycombe Wanderers was offered to Gape and continued to play for them until the end of the 2022-23 season. On 19th October 2023, he joined Sutton United on a short-term deal until he departed from the club upon expiration date in January 2024.
Gape signed another short-term deal with League One club Northampton Town in February 2024 until the end of the season and departed the club on a free transfer.
Gape signed two more short-term spells with National League club Eastleigh, and League Two club Shrewsbury on October 2024 and January 2025 respectively, before leaving the clubs when his contracts expired.
On 27th June 2025, Gape joined the U’s squad on a free transfer for the 2025-26 season.
“I was really lucky to have a really good bunch of senior pros to help guide me. And now I feel like it’s my turn to be that senior pro to help give guidance and help the young lads…”
