Attacking midfielder Jack Payne joined the U’s squad in the summer of 2024, on a two-year contract after departing Charlton Athletic.
Payne’s professional career began in Essex, progressing through the youth academy with U’s rivals Southend United, going on to make almost 100 appearances for the Shrimpers in his three years with the first team.
Eye-catching appearances garnered the interest of Championship side Huddersfield Town, with Jack making the move to the Yorkshire club in 2016, and playing his part as the Terriers booked their place in the Premier League through the play-offs.
However, Payne wasn’t rewarded with an appearance in the top flight, and was loaned out to Oxford United, Blackburn Rovers and Bradford City while his parent club were in the Premier League.
Departing upon the expiry of his contract with Huddersfield, Payne joined League One Lincoln City in 2019, staying just one season with the Imps, and playing thirty games for the club.
His next stay was with Swindon Town on a two-year deal, making plenty of appearances for the Robins in their first season as they were relegated from League One, but he starred the following campaign in 2021/22 with thirteen goals in thirty-five outings as Ben Garner’s side made the play-offs.
And Payne was one player who followed Garner to the capital to Charlton Athletic in League One. Again, he made plenty of appearances with fifty in all competitions in his first campaign, but was loaned out to MK Dons in 23/24, a spell where he helped his side to the play-offs before losing out to Crawley Town.
Following his release from Charlton, he joined the U’s in the summer of 2024 on a two-year deal.
Payne's biggest highlights of the season so far are his two hat-tricks in two separate home matches. First was against Chesterfield on 4th October 2025, beating them 6-2, and then Barnet on 21st February 2026, within the final minutes of the match, winning 4-1 at home.
“I just think as a team if we’re winning, it makes it a lot easier for me, and if I’m playing well, it makes it easier for the team. So, yeah I definitely think I’m in a good place right now.”
