Players Back Tournament

11 October 2013

U's squad remember Alex.

U's trio Tom Eastman, Sammie Szmodics and Billy Roast were on hand to give out trophies at an annual football tournament on Thursday.

The competition has given Alex’s friends, family and the school community a way to celebrate and remember him and has provided an exciting, competitive and memorable experience for all involved.

The Alex Launder Memorial Tournament was founded 6 years ago in celebration of a wonderful young man and his passion for football, who sadly passed away after an accident on Layer Road, close to the U's former stadium.

Teams from local schools including The Stanway School, Philip Morant, Thomas Lord Audley, St Helena, Colchester High School, Alderman Blaxill and Thurstable competed in this year’s tournament and winners’ trophies and medals were presented by Tom Eastman, Sammie Szmodics and Billy Roast on Thursday.

His mother Natalie explained: "I

The winning schools this year were Philip Morant School (Year 7) and Thomas Lord Audley School (Year 11) and this year's tournament will be the final one in Alex's memory.

Sammie attended Stanway School himself, prior to taking on his scholarship with the U's. We look forward to welcoming the winning teams on Saturday!

"As his friends move on to follow their own dreams and aspirations the tournament has come to a natural conclusion and we are reassured that it has played an important role in supporting these young adults in remembering Alex."

"The tournament was set up to support Alex’s friends, brother and family through a difficult journey.

t has been a hard decision to make but this year’s tournament will be the final year for the competition.
