During half time in Saturday's game against Preston, there will be an entertaining mascot race in support of St Helena Hospice who provide care for people with life limiting illnesses in North East Essex.

Mascots from local businesses, charities and community groups as well as the U's very own Eddie the Eagle and Preston's Deepdale Duck will race around the pitch and battle it out in attempt to be crowned this year’s winner.

Racing on Saturday are:-

- Dandy Lion (St Helena Hospice)
- Eddie the Eagle (Colchester United)
- Deepdale Duck (Preston North End)
- Roxy The Racoon (Greenstead Community Centre)
- Loopy Rabbit (Park Holidays)
- Edna the Kangaroo (Oaks Hospital)
- Ormi the Bee (Ormiston Children & Families Trust)
- Buzz (Space Kingdom)

This is the 4th annual mascot race raising awareness and funds for St Helena Hospice in Colchester.

St Helena Hospice exists to meet the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of people with life-limiting illness in North East Essex and the Colne Valley area of Mid Essex, no matter what their diagnosis.

The Hospice provides specialist and holistic care delivered by highly qualified teams of specialists including nurses, doctors, physio and occupational therapists, social workers, complementary therapists, counsellors and a chaplaincy team at any stage of the illness.

The Hospice also supports families, including children, before and after bereavement.

There will be a bucket collection for St Helena Hospice before during and after the match.  Please give generously to support their outstanding and vital work in their local community.

Matt Hudson, Media Manager at Colchester United said “We’re really looking forward to this year’s race. Eddie is determined to regain his crown and has been in training over the past couple of months.

“We hope that our fans and those who come down from Preston show their generosity on the day for St Helena Hospice.”

Jill Purcell, Corporate and Major Donor Manager at St Helena Hospice: “Good luck to all the mascots taking part in today's race, we are looking forward to seeing who wins though obviously we hope our very own Dandy Lion gives everyone a challenge!

“We would like to say a big thank you to Colchester United for hosting the race on our behalf.  Thanks also to the mascots taking part and to all the fans for their generosity and support for St Helena Hospice.”
