Fans Of Fridays?

13 March 2014

Our latest Fans Forum report.

Three weeks ago, Colchester United Season Ticket holders were welcomed to the Weston Homes Community Stadium for the latest of our forums.

Many topics were discussed on the night and, in the third of our reports, we take a brief look at the discussion held around Friday night football at the U's home stadium.

Friday Football?
Since the move to WHCS in 2008, there have been a handful of Friday night games, used by the club to mix up the fixture list and to try and attract a different group of fans to the stadium.

Always a U's tradition, Friday football has seen us pick up decent crowds for those games. Chairman Robbie Cowling and boss Joe Dunne were asked whether Fridays could become a regular item on the U's fixture list in the future.

Robbie was certainly not adverse to it, saying: "I like Friday night games and we have tried to get agreements from other clubs. We have not always had much luck in getting them to come down on a Friday, but we know if you have a game on the following Tuesday, it does give you more rest, which is also useful for the travelling team."

And Joe confirmed he too would be keen to look at more in the future, saying: "I really embrace Friday night games.

"I don't think yet we've quite got the same atmosphere on those Fridays as we did at Layer Road, but as we grow the gates, I think we can definitely get there.

"There's an energy to the fans and the players under floodlights, so I'm all for it. We've asked teams in the past and will in the future."
