Canvey In The Cup

12 November 2015

Islanders visit in the Senior Cup.

Colchester United will take on Canvey Island will in the repeat of the 2012 Essex Senior Cup Final when the two sides meet again at the Weston Homes Community Stadium in Round Four of this season's competition.

Danny Heale's Ryman League Premier Division contenders won 3-1 at Barking in Round Three to put them in the hat for the last 16’s pairings, which were broadcast by competition supporters BBC Essex on Wednesday.

They were picked out to travel to Colchester, who advanced themselves courtesy of an impressive win over AFC Hornchurch.

On Monday 16th April 2012, a solitary header from defender Rob King was enough to hand Canvey their fourth Senior Cup Final triumph as they narrowly defeated the U's, 1-0 at Thurrock FC's Ship Lane ground. Ex-United trainee King rose to nod home Ashley Dumas' free kick seven minutes from the end of a captivating contest.

This draw featured all six of the county’s Sky Bet Football League and Vanarama National League clubs.

Another team potentially celebrating a draw against a professional club are East Thurrock United. The Rocks' 3-0 win over Great Wakering Rovers guarantees them a home Fourth Round tie against Southend United or Redbridge, who meet on Tuesday.

Heybridge Swifts, winners on penalties away at Wivenhoe Town in the last round, have been rewarded with a home game against Dagenham & Redbridge, who beat Basildon United.

Meanwhile Tilbury, comfortable winners at Halstead Town, host Essex's only Vanarama National club Braintree Town, who recorded a 3-1 victory at Billericay Town.

The winners, and last representatives from the first two rounds, will earn the right to travel to Ryman League Premier Division club Brentwood Town, who won 4-1 at home to Brightlingsea Regent last time out.

Only two teams from Step Five and below have survived in the competition, with Essex Senior League clubs Ilford and Bowers & Pitsea meeting tonight in one of the three remaining Third Round ties.

Assisting with the draw was Ben Fryer from BBC Essex’s Sports Team, who drew the home teams, and Mark Wallis of the Essex County FA'’s Cups & Competitions Department, who was responsible for the away sides.

Fryer commented: "Non-league football is at the heart of our local sports coverage, so we're proud to support the BBC Essex Senior Cup again this season. Good luck to all the teams bidding for a place in the final!"

These ties are due to take place on or before 12th December, and all the BBC Essex Senior Cup reports and news you need to know can be found at www.essexfa.com, by following @EssexCountyFA on Twitter and by searching for 'EssexFootball' on Facebook.
