All Square With Wednesday

Late drama in penultimate fixture

23 April 2018

Colchester United U23s recorded a draw against high flying Sheffield Wednesday on Monday night in a match that had a dramatic conclusion.

Ryan Gondoh's stunning second half strike looked like it might be enough to win the game for the U's, before the visitors drew level in injury time from Fraser Preston's header.

And yet the U's had another chance to win it, but saw Callum Jones' penalty saved as things ended all square.

Chances were at a premium in the first half, although the home side nearly took the lead after only a couple of minutes, with Decarrey Sheriff's first time volley going just wide.

Both teams were eager in the tackle as the half wore on, but the defences remained on top as the match got to half time without the deadlock being broken.

Wednesday are riding high in the northern section of the U23s Development League and could have taken the lead five minutes after half time, but Liam Waldock's shot was smothered by Dillon Barnes.

The visitors were beginning to turn the screw when the U's took the lead on 74 minutes.

Gondoh received the ball out wide, drove past his man and smashed a shot high into the far side of the net past Dan Wallis.

Four minutes later, Barnes pulled off a good stop to deny Preston at the far post as a goal looked certain.

At the other end, Sam Warde drifted past his man and bent a shot just wide as the U's looked for a second.

They looked to have seen the game out, only for Preston to do better with a second header from a similar position, his effort beating Barnes this time.

The U's had a chance to regain the lead as Sims was fouled in the box, but Wallis guessed where Callum Jones was putting his penalty and it finished all square.

The U23s conclude their fixtures with a home game at Florence Park against Watford on Thursday.

U's: Barnes, Gondoh, W. Wright, Rooney, Kensdale, Wilson (Jones 69), Anderson, Warde, Issa, Sheriff, Sims
