U23s Complete Great Week With A Win

U's ease to victory over Burnley

9 February 2018

Colchester United U23s completed an excellent week with a 3-0 win against Burnley in the Premier League Cup.

Fresh from a 5-2 victory against Ipswich at Florence Park, the U's put in a positive all round display to run out winners against the Clarets.

And it was more good news for Decarrey Sheriff, as he got two goals to add to his hat-trick against Town earlier in the week.

The U's were on the front foot from the start of the game and had a couple of early chances to break the deadlock.

Burnley went close as Massanka spun and fired over from a clever corner routine, but it was the U's who went ahead on 34 minutes.

A corner wasn't cleared and after Mitchell saved an initial shot, Sheriff was on hand to slot home from close range.

Tariq Issa then took the initiative, driving across the box to fire in a low shot that fizzed just past the post.

However, the U's didn't have it completely their own way, as central defender Clarke almost levelled it up for Burnley, with his header going just wide from a corner.

Ahead at the break, Sheriff nearly got his second just before the hour as a defensive mix up saw him seize on a loose ball, only for Mitchell to save well.

Mitchell could do little four minutes later though, as Dickenson powered forwards and slid the ball to Sheriff, who rounded the shot stopper and kept his balance to roll the ball home.

Dickenson's evening was completed midway through the second period as he continued his comeback.

And the U's went further ahead with eight minutes to go, as a routine off the training ground saw Diaz Wright find space in the box to score off the base of the post.

With the game secure, the U's were happy to hit Burnley on the counter in the remaining moments and saw off the game without any issues to register their first points in the group stages of this year's cup competition.

U's: Hayes, Rooney, Kensdale, W. Wright, Diaz Wright, Chilvers, Dickenson (Jones 67), Issa (Wilson 80), Allarakhia, Gondoh, Sheriff (Phipps 80)
