Tony To Retire & Jon Has New Role

Robbie updates on changes at the training ground

16 May 2019

Colchester United physio Tony Flynn is to retire from his role as the club's first team physiotherapist, as he brings 14 years at the club to a close.

Whilst Tony moves onto pastures new, Academy Manager Jon De Souza is to take on a new role as the U's look to the future of the club.

Chairman Robbie Cowling explained: "I wanted to update you on a couple of significant staff changes at Colchester United.

"Tony Flynn, who joined Colchester United a few months before I bought the club, has decided to retire so that he can spend more time with his family. Tony has worked tirelessly for Colchester United and the first team physio role is extremely demanding.

"Tony has provided his services at over 1,000 competitive league games in professional football of which over 700 were for Colchester United over the past 14 seasons.

"He will be a much missed member of our staff and I would personally like to thank him for the role Tony has played at the club."

And there is a new role for Academy Manager Jon De Souza, as the U's continue to shape their staffing at the training ground.

Robbie continued: "Jon De Souza, our Academy Manager, has been promoted to Director of Performance.

"I felt that the club needed a department that would concentrate solely on improving the performances of our teams, players and staff.

"Sport has moved on so far in recent years and those teams that have invested in modern methods to enhance their performances have been rewarded with amazing returns.

"Jon has a Sports Science degree, a Business Masters degree, has coached at first team level and he has done a great job for Colchester United since he joined as Academy Manager three years ago.

"Jon is also passionate about what we are doing at Colchester United.

"These two staff changes mean we have some challenging roles to fill but we are already attracting high calibre applicants."
