Get Your Friday Football Fix!

Relive the 1998 Play-Off Final

21 May 2020

Watch another memorable match in the U's history.

Colchester United are set to face Exeter City in the Play-Off Semi-Final this season, but what happened the last time the U's got to the Play-Offs?

Exactly twenty two years ago on Friday, they took on Torquay United at Wembley for a place in League One.

Steve Wignall's side had beaten Barnet over two legs in their Semi-Final, whilst Kevin Hodges' Gulls had comfortably defeated Scarborough to reach Wembley.

We've got the full game for you to watch on Friday evening, with the game kicking off at 7.45pm just as it did in 1998.

To watch, head to our YouTube channel colu_official on Friday evening at 7.45pm.

The game was moved to the Friday night from the Saturday afternoon, with Glenn Hoddle wanting England to play on the Saturday against Saudi Arabia in preparation for the 1998 World Cup in France.

That meant a vastly reduced crowd at the twin towers for the U's game, but they didn't let that deter them as they won 1-0 to gain promotion to the third tier.

The two sides were separated by a single goal in the tight affair, with David Gregory's penalty on twenty two minutes being the decider.

It sparked a long period in the third tier for the U's, with eight years spent there before promotion to the Championship in 2006.
