Young U's Through To FA Youth Cup Third Round

Tom Stagg's double against Dorking sets up third round tie against Watford

19 November 2020

Colchester United U18s came out on top against Dorking Wanderers in the FA Youth Cup last night in a 2-0 win, with both goals coming from Tom Stagg (pictured above).

Liam Bailey's side made sure there was no upset in the FA Youth Cup when they travelled to Dorking Wanderers in the second round.

His side came out on top against the National League North side's U18 with a 2-0 win, with both goals coming from prolific goalscorer Tom Stagg in the second half.

There was little to separate the two sides in the first period, with Harvey Sayer going closest for Colchester United just before the half came to an end.

But in the second half the U's looked far the better side, despite having to wait until the seventy-second minute to open the scoring.

The four attacking players in Tom Stagg, Donell Thomas, Samson Tovide and Harvey Sayer were proving a real threat to the Dorking goal, with Tovide going close on a couple of occasions.

But it was Stagg who broke the deadlock with less than twenty minutes to play. Ryan Lowe collected the ball on the edge of the area but saw his effort blocked by a home player. The ball kindly fell to Stagg who sheidled the ball before unleashing a left foot shot that found the back of the net off the inside of the post.

The game was sealed in injury time when Stagg got his second. Samson Tovide spotted substitute Kacy Parish arriving at the back post, with Barnett saving well from the initial header. But Tom Stagg was in the right place at the right time and lashed the ball home with seconds left on the clock.

The young U's victory earns them a spot in the third round of the FA Youth Cup, where they will travel to take on Watford.

Full details on their trip to Watford will be published as and when we get them.
