Malta Win First Nations League Game

Luke Gambin plays eighty-nine minutes for country in victory over Latvia

14 October 2020

Colchester United midfielder Luke Gambin is currently away on international duty with Malta.

And Malta picked up their first ever win in the UEFA Nations League last night with a 1-0 victory over Latvia in Riga.

Luke Gambin was part of the starting eleven for the match, and played eighty-nine minutes in the historic victory for his country.

The Colchester United midfielder was substituted with a minute of normal time to play and when the score was still goalless.

But a Steve Borg header in the sixth minute of injury time found the back of the net and was enough to earn three points and a first win in the Nations League for Malta.

After four games in the current tournament, Malta sit second in League D Group 1 with five points. They are five points behind group leaders, the Faroe Islands who have ten points, but ahead of Latvia and Andorra who have three and two points respectively.

Malta do not return to the international scene for another four weeks, when they will complete their Nations League campaign with home games against Andorra and the Faroe Islands in mid November.
