Newport County Preview

Steve Ball's side travel to Rodney Parade for meeting with table toppers

27 October 2020

The U's will be looking to make it three wins in a row this evening with a trip to Rodney Parade to take on Newport County at 7pm.

Sitting top of the table, Newport County will be the opponents this evening with Michael Flynn's side enjoying their best start to an EFL season in their history.

Taking six wins in their opening eight games, they took the top spot at the weekend when Cambridge dropped points against Bolton at home.

The U's made it two wins in a row for the first time in 2020 on Saturday as they held on to defeat Harrogate Town 2-1 at the JobServe Community Stadium, lifting Colchester up to ninth in the table.

"I need the standards to be higher and I know they will be but it's an unbelievable trait to have, to win games of football when you're not at your best." - Steve Ball

"I've been here too long to say 'we've played well but we got beat' and I don't really want to be that team. I'll take bad performances or average halves of football; we find a way to win and that's brilliant to have."

"There is a real drive in there with the likes of Tommy Smith, Dean Gerken and Harry Pell and they all want to get the best out of eachother."

"I keep saying that it's a new group and I'm a new manager this year. We have to expect some indifferent period and if we can maximise points in the last two games through playing indifferently, that's a brilliant positive."
