Gambin Shines on Duty For Malta

U's attacker bags two assists in Nations League opener

4 September 2020

Luke Gambin started for Malta in their Nations League opener last night as they were defeated 3-2 by the Faroe Islands.

It was heartbreak for Luke Gambin and his Malta teammates as they were narrowly defeated by the Faroe Islands thanks to two goals in the final three minutes.

Gambin put in an inflential performance for Malta as he set up both goals in their opening Nations League game.

The Faroe Islands took the lead midway through the first half before Gambin set up the equaliser in the thirty-seventh minute. A flowing move saw Degabriele curl the ball into the bottom corner, after neatly being set up by Gambin who laid the ball back to him in the area.

With seventeen minutes to play, the visiting team took the lead with a low volley from captain Agius. The ball was whipped in high from Gambin who picked out his teammate unmarked at the back post to steer it beyond the home 'keeper.

With just three minutes on the clock and the home side throwing everything at the Malta defence, they found an equaliser. Olsen curled in a shot to level the scores before the final blow in the nintieth minute.

A fine free kick from Hendriksson was bent into the top corner of the net giving the 'keeper no chance as the home side stole all three points with seconds left on the clock.

Next up for Gambin and his Malta teammates, a home match against Latvia in the second match of the UEFA Nations League.
