U's at Crown Oil Arena for next Sky Bet League Two match

25 August 2021

Rochdale are the opponents for Colchester United in the next match in Sky Bet League Two, with Hayden Mullins' side travelling up to the North West on Friday evening.

Colchester United will head up to the Crown Oil Arena on Friday evening bouyed by their first win of the 2021/22 campaign, a 2-1 win at Oldham Athletic on Saturday afternoon.

Goals from Freddie Sears and Noah Chilvers in the first half were enough to secure all three points for Mullins' men, despite a late goal from the home side making it a nervy finish at Boundary Park.

Nevertheless, the U's bagged their first win of the season, putting them on five points from three games, sitting in thirteenth position. Tom Eastman, Ryan Clampin and Cole Skuse were all missing from the first win of the season, with Mullins needing to make a desicion on their fitness ahead of the trip to Rochdale.

The Opposition - Rochdale

Like Colchester United, Rochdale picked up their first win of the campaign on Saturday afternoon, a 3-1 win on the road at Northampton Town. Two late goals in the game from Andrews and Odoh secured the win for Robbie Stockdale's side, after Taylor's first half opener at Sixfields.

After relegation from League One last season, The Dale were able to keep their squad mostly together, although there were notable departures. Kwadwo Baah and Paul McShane both made moves to Premier League sides in Watford and Manchester United respectively, but with nine additions this season, Robbie Stockdale will be hoping to orchestrate an instant return to the third tier.

Alex Newby has hit two goals in four league games for Friday night's hosts, with supporting goals from Grant, Taylor, Andrews and Odoh adding to their tally of six, making Rochdale the fourth highest scorers in the division.

But a leaky defence, conceding six goals has left Stockdale's team with the join third worst defensive record, putting his side in fifteenth place with four point from four games.

Last Time We Met

The U's faced Rochdale on the final day of the 2015/16 season, having already been relegated. Nathaniel Mendez-Laing gave the visitors the lead at the JobServe Community Stadium, before Joe Edwards' equaliser just before the sixty-minute mark. Calvin Andrew put Rochdale back in front fifteen minutes later, condemning the U's to a final defeat in the third tier.
