Football College Programme Visits Essex University

Preseason begins with fitness testing

11 August 2022

Students from the Colchester United Football College Programme based at Thurstable School in Tiptree, recently visited Essex University to undergo preseason testing.

Essex Sport Strength & Conditioning Coaches supported Colchester United staff in gathering fitness data on players to support their physical development through preseason ready for the new  EFL Community & Education Football Alliance.

Students were supported by Essex University Strength & Conditioning Staff providing data to support each student’s preseason fitness programmes.

The following tests were carried out:

  • Countermovement Jump
  • 10m Sprint
  • 20m Sprint
  • Agility
  • 30-15 Fitness

Captain Archie Corner shared: “It was a great experience for the lads to visit Essex University and undertake testing just like the pros do each preseason. It also helps us individually to know where we’re at with our own specific data that can support our fitness development in preparation for the new EFL season. Thank you to the Essex University staff for having us visit and supporting us with this process.”

Isaac Berry, College Programme Coach mentioned: “What an experience for our boys to come here and get treated like a pro. This provides them with the opportunity to use data to enhance their performance ready for the new EFL College season. We have boys striving for Academy trials this season and experiences like this will only help them prepare for these opportunities if they get them this year.”

The Football College Programme at Colchester United provides a student-athlete experienced supporting young players on and off the pitch within education and their football development.

During the 2021/22 season, four college students were invited to train with the club’s U18 Scholars for a week, to assess their potential. Providing opportunities such as the visit to Essex University gives the college players access to what it’s like to work at a professional scholar’s level and gives them extra tools to support the enhancement of their performance. More opportunities will be available again this season to students who show the potential to receive a chance to test themselves in the club’s academy environment.

Limited spaces are still available in our U19 squad for the new academic year!
