U’s up against Red Dragons in North Wales

15 December 2023

Matty Etherington’s men have a tough task of travelling to North Wales this weekend, as they face Wrexham in a Sky Bet League Two clash.

Colchester United will be fully aware of the Red Dragon’s current form that sees them sitting in second place in the league table.

However, despite the hype around the Welsh side for one reason or another, Matty is certain that for his players it’ll just be a case of going out there and  trying to win a football game.

“That's what it's all about”, Matty said. “No better place to get back on to a decent winning run than going away to Wrexham against a good side and doing it there, which we've shown we're capable of.

“Like games earlier on away from home where we showed a real team performance. We're going to need more of that on Saturday.”

With a big crowd expected at the Racecourse Ground, Matty stressed that Saturday’s game will provide a good opportunity for the players to showcase what they’re capable and potentially cause, what outsiders will call, an upset.

“We should be relishing it and I'm sure the boys will be”, Matty added. “It's a great place to go and showcase yourself at the minute with all the hype around the club and we know who we're up against.

“We’re fully prepped – we worked today [Thursday], we’re working again tomorrow [Friday] and we're going to have to be very good in certain areas. But I'm sure with what we've got and what we will have on the pitch in terms of the attacking threat we’ll carry a threat as always. So it's about getting the out of possession defensive stuff right with diligence to what we're doing and then I'm sure will get chances at the other end.”

Matty will also be pleased to have several previously injured players available to him on Saturday. Experienced forward John Akinde could feature in Wales, as could Ellis Iandolo who will be in the squad.

With that in mind, anyone who will run out onto the pitch on Saturday afternoon will have to impress the Head Coach.

Matty said: “They’ve got to grab the chance because we've got players coming back sooner rather than later.

“Ellis will be in the squad for the weekend. Great to have him back. It's gives us that balance on the left-hand side and there are other players that aren't too far away as well.

“It's an opportunity for the players to make sure that they can't be left out in the next game. And that will be the message to them that with the players we've got coming back, the squad is going to be looking a lot stronger in the coming weeks and go and take your chance.”
