It’s twenty-five-years to the day since the U’s last trip to Wembley, and the unforgettable 1-0 play-off win over Torquay United.
After seeing off Barnet in the semi-finals, Colchester lined up against Torquay at Wembley for the chance to reach the third tier.
And Steve Wignall’s side came out on top thanks to a first-half penalty from David Gregory – converting from twelve yards after handball from a Gulls’ defender.
The momentous result came just a year after the U’s had suffered penalty shoot-out heartbreak in the capital a year before after losing the Auto Windscreen Shield final to Carlisle United in 1997.
But there was to be no mistake as Colchester secured their spot in the third tier for the first time since 1981 – making it a second Wembley win in six years, after the FA Trophy win in 1992.
