Football College Programme @ Thurstable - Nov '23

23 November 2023

We have had a really positive start to the season with our current Boys Football College Programme participants, both on the pitch (in their respective leagues), and off the pitch with some inspirational Education and Enrichment opportunities.

Colchester United Community Foundation have developed a strong relationship with Thurstable School & Sixth Form over recent years, allowing for a rich and diverse programme to be developed that we are proud to deliver.  Our Football College Programme currently has 2 Full-time teams competing in the Community & Education Football Alliance League, with our A-team in the highest South East Division for the first time -following promotion last season.

Kieran Michaels, former Academy Scholar and Lead Phase Coach at the Colchester United Academy has joined to lead the programme this year working alongside Head Coach, Jack Munns who remains on the programme following his debut in 2022/2023.

2024/25 Trials

There has been a strong start to our enrolment process for the 2024/2025 season, with around 40 players attending our first Open Trial session in October and we are really excited to see more new faces at the upcoming Trials just before Christmas on Thursday 21st December 2023 - 4pm-6pm, being held at Shrub End Community Sports Centre, Colchester, CO2 9BG.

If you are currently in Year 11 or 12 and want to enhance your studies with a Full-time football programme, please book a space on the above trial date using the link below;

Colchester United A-Team

Colchester United A-Team currently sit 9th in their league having been promoted to the top division, South East 1, last season. Impressive results against Swindon & Norwich and solid start to the Cup Campaign have been the highlights so far. Player, Emmanuel Gregory, has been very consistent at the back for the A-Team, which saw him win Player of the Month for September.

Football College Programme Head Coach, Jack Munns said, “It’s been a tough start to the campaign for the boys, coming up against some brilliant college programmes, however they have applied themselves brilliantly and have been very competitive in all of the games so far. We look forward to a strong end to the year to set us up nicely in both League and Cup competitions for 2024."

Colchester United B-Team

Colchester United B-Team sit 4th in division South East 4 after some good results to start the season with emphatic wins against Ipswich, Charlton & Norwich being the standout results. Player Fadil Agbo-Ola had some notable performances in October which saw him become our most recent player of the month. Charlie Sykes currently leads the way in terms of goals throughout the programme with 10 goals in 7 matches.

Football College Programme Lead, Kieran Michaels said, “It’s been a good start to the season for the B-Team squad, and they have competed really well in all of their fixtures, winning 3 games, drawing 1 and losing 1. The Cup competition has also been a great experience for all, allowing the players to test themselves against teams in the Leagues above and we hope to finish the group stage strongly. Like the A-Team, we are looking forward to a strong finish to the year to set up an exciting second half of the season."

Enrichment

An important part of our Football College Programme this season, are our ‘Enrichment Thursday’ sessions. These sessions offer an opportunity for all our players to think about the next steps for their future, after finishing the programme, as well as to gain knowledge around many different aspects of life in football. We have had a whole host of different talks delivered from US Scholarship presentations to Colchester United Academy workshops on Nutrition and Psychology & Team analysis. There are further exciting enrichment days scheduled, including Question and Answer sessions with Ex-Professional footballers and Media in Sport training, which we hope will broaden the college players opportunities and interests.

If you are interested in learning more about our 6th Form Football College Programme please contact the Programme Lead, Kieran Michaels.
