U’s aiming for four consecutive league victories

10 November 2023

Colchester United will return to the JobServe Community Stadium for their second Sky Bet League Two game of the week when they face Sutton United on Saturday afternoon (KO 3pm).

The U’s will aim to carry on their winning form, coming out victorious out of their last four league games.

Last time out, Matty Etherington’s men beat Swindon Town 3-1 after an inspired second-half display.

The Opposition

Sutton United sit in last place in the league table, having amassed ten points in sixteen matches.

Out of those games, they won three, drew one, and lost twelve. Their last five clashes have seen the London-based side win two and lose three. They managed to beat Bradford City 2-1 in the league and AFC Fylde 2-1 in the FA Cup.

Speaking after their FA Cup victory over National League side Fylde, Sutton’s manager Matt Gray said that he “wasn’t pleased” with certain things but never doubted his side.

He added: “I was desperate to get in at half-time with a clean sheet and I knew that we were going to be very dominant in the second half.

“We just had to get the clean sheet and get to the half-time break. And I thought we were going to have a bonus just before half-time with a goal-mouth scramble and several good chances. I thought we were actually going to nick a bonus because I felt that they were the better side first half.

“Not loads in it, we had moments, we had chances, but I think they edged the first half, so to concede a goal in injury time was very disappointing, but the half-time talk was very similar to what it probably would have been at 0-0, regardless of that goal.

“And I knew we’d be on the front foot and very aggressive and very dominant in that second half and we were. And to get a goal followed up by the second was very pleasing.”

Despite their low league position, Sutton have a few players that the U’s will have to be aware of. One of them is Harry Smith who has impressed at Sutton United since joining them in July 2023. In fifteen games during the campaign so far, he has scored nine goals and provided two assists – taking his goal contribution tally to eleven.

Josh Coley will be another threat that Matty Etherington’s side will be aware of. The midfielder has made a good start to his career at Sutton United, having joined the London-based side in June 2023. He has so far featured in every single match for Sutton this season, without any exception. In those twenty-two games, Coley has managed seven goal contributions – one goal and six assists.

Last Time We Met

An early Sutton goal saw the U’s down by one goal after just eleven minutes when both sides last met at the JobServe Community Stadium on 22nd April 2023. However, strikes from Luke Chambers, John Akinde, Junior Tchamadeu, and Noah Chilvers secured a brilliant 4-1 victory in the end.
