Report | U's Pegged Back Late On Against Sutton

Two late goals in 1-1 draw at JCS

11 November 2023

Colchester United were pegged back late on as Sutton took a share of the points in a 1-1 draw at the JCS.

The first half left much to be desired, before Arthur Read put the U’s ahead with ten minutes before full time in the second period.

But a late strike from Omar Sowunmi saw the U’s only collect a point against their South London visitors.

The point sees the U’s move further up the table to sixteenth, extending their unbeaten run to four matches in the league, with a trip to table-topping Stockport County to come next weekend.

Matty Etherington named a side with two changes from the eleven that started in the 3-1 win against Swindon Town on Tuesday evening.

Connor Hall missed out after picking up an injury, while Jay Mingi dropped to the bench; it was two straight swaps for Colchester with Dallison and Chilvers coming in.

Lining up in the same formation as they ended the game against the Robins, Goodman was in goal protected by a back three of Egbo, Dallison and Mitchell. Will Greenidge and Jayden Fevrier were on the flanks, with Read and McGeehan sitting behind Chilvers who was the supporting act for Taylor and Tovide in attack.

The first half saw few chances for either side, with only Taylor and Tovide going close for the U’s. Etherington’s side contained the visitors to just half chances, with three yellow cards handed out by the officials.

Kizzi, Smith and Beautyman were all cautioned for fouls on the U’s players with the teams heading to the dressing rooms goalless.

There were no changes at half time, with Sutton coming out and looking for an early goal – and they nearly had it through former U’s defender Omar Sowunmi.

A free kick was tossed in for Goodman to collect, but he spilled after contact with Sowunmi’s effort needing to be cleared away from the goalmouth by Samson Tovide.

A lacklustre second half continued with the U’s opting for three changes with twenty minutes to play – Joe Taylor, Samson Tovdie and Noah Chilvers all came off with Bradley Ihionvien, Tom Hopper and Chay Cooper all coming on.

A fourth booking was issued to Sutton with John carded for a reckless tackle on Bradley Ihionvien on the halfway line. Tom Dallison was then booked for a foul on Smith, the first of the afternoon for the U’s.

Joe Kizzi was lucky to escape a red card after bringing Fevrier down on the edge of the penalty area, with only a goal kick signalled by the officials. Cameron McGeehan was then booked for handball a minute later, as Sutton wasted a free kick from a decent position.

With ten minutes to play, the U’s got their noses in front with the first goal of the game, and it was one to remember. Arthur Read weaved his way through four Sutton tackles into the penalty area before applying the finish into the bottom corner, sending the home fans wild.

Fiace Kelleher made a welcome return to action with less than two minutes of normal time to play, coming on for Will Greenidge just ahead of stoppage time.

But the U’s weren’t able to hold on for their fourth consecutive win, with a Sutton equaliser coming at the death. Former U’s man Omar Sowunmi popped up at the right time for the equaliser after a free kick from the left flank to steal a point for the visitors.

The draw sees the U’s move further up the table, to sixteenth with twenty points from seventeen games, extending their unbeaten run to four under Matty Etherington.
