U's at League One Cambridge in EFL Trophy

16 October 2023

Ben Garner’s side will head to Cambridge United in a break from league action on Tuesday evening, taking on the League One side in the EFL Trophy.

Both sides will be wanting to get their first points on the board in the group stages of the competition after losses in the first game of the tournament.

Last time out, Colchester United made eleven changes in a 5-0 defeat to Tottenham’s U21s, and could make similar alterations at the Abbey Stadium on Tuesday evening.

U’s boss Ben Garner hinted that Tom Dallison, Fiacre Kelleher and Owura Edwards would be in contention after taking part in training sessions, with Dallison playing forty-five minutes against Forest Green on Saturday.

The Opposition
Like Colchester, Cambridge will be aiming to get their first points on the board in the EFL Trophy after a 2-0 defeat to Peterborough United in their opening game.

In fact, Tuesday’s hosts haven’t won any of their last seven matches in any competitions, a run that stretches back to their first game in September, a 1-0 win against Reading in League One.

Cambridge boss Mark Bonner has already said he will be making at least eight changes to his starting eleven from their 1-1 draw against Shrewsbury Town on Saturday afternoon in the league.

Fringe players are likely to be given an opportunity to impress as Cambridge aim to inject some momentum into their season.

Last Time We Met

The U's picked up a point in the last meeting with Cambridge, taking place at the JobServe Community Stadium in January 2021. Harvey Knibbs put the visitors ahead early but an own-goal from Callum Harriott's effort meant the spoils were shares in the League One contest.
