Match Preview | Notts County (A)

U’s travel to Meadow Lane for first time since August 2018

19 April 2024

Colchester United will take on Notts County in their last away match of the season on Saturday 20th April (KO 3pm).

It will be the U’s first trip to Meadow Lane since August 2018, with the Magpies making their return to EFL football this season.

Danny Cowley’s men will also be hoping to carry on their impressive winning form, following two vital victories against Crawley and Grimsby Town, knowing that a win on Saturday will guarantee survival in League Two.

The Opposition

Standing in the way of that will be a Notts County side that currently sits fourteenth in the league table, having nothing to play for in their last two matches.

The Magpies are eight points behind the last play-off guaraneeting place and eighteen points ahead of Sutton who currently occupy the last remaining relegation spot, following Forest Green’s departure from the Football League last Tuesday.

While possessing the attacking talents of League Two Top Scorer Macaulay Langstaff, David McGoldrick, and Jodi Jones, the Nottingham-based club has had plenty of issues with its defence this season and that is what caused the majority of problems for them.

Despite being the second top-scoring team in the division with eighty-eight goals, only behind Stockport with ninety-one, Notts find themselves at the very bottom of the rankings when it comes to goals conceded (eighty-five), with their defeat to Stockport on Tuesday being the fifth time they conceded five goals in a league game.

Speaking after the match to BBC Radio Nottingham, the Magpies Head Coach Stuart Maynard expressed his desire to use the defeat as motivation for next season.

He said: “That has got to fuel us. That has got to really hurt. That hurts me that result and seeing them pick up the title here.

“That has got to fuel us for next season, we have got to go again and make sure that it is us come next season.”

Last Time We Met

There were plenty of goals at the JobServe Community Stadium at the end of September 2023, with the U’s running out 5-4 winners in a manic clash. After taking the lead for the second time in the thirty-first minute through Jayden Fevrier’s strike, Colchester never gave it back with the Magpies trying to chase but failing in the end.
