U's aiming to bounce back from Harrogate defeat

15 February 2024

Colchester United will welcome Accrington Stanley to the JobServe Community Stadium on Saturday afternoon (KO 3pm)  with Danny and Nicky Cowley aiming for their first home victory.

The coaching duo were stripped of the chance to secure their first win at JCS on Tuesday when Colchester's clash against Grimsby Town was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.

Colchester are still unbeaten in North Essex, and will want to bounce back from their defeat to Harrogate Town last week but standing in the way of that will be a decent Stanley side, which currently sits twelfth in the Sky Bet League Two table on forty-five points.

The ‘Owd Reds’ form has slightly dropped off in recent months following a respectable start to the season, which at one point saw them sit third in the standings.

Accrington have succumbed to two defeats in their last five matches, managing two wins and one draw.

Last time out, Stanley faced AFC Wimbledon at home comfortably beating the Dons 2-0.

Speaking after the victory, Accrington manager John Coleman [pictured below] said: “It’s an important three points. It was a typical League Two game played on a lively pitch. It wasn’t conducive to a lot of football being played but we stuck to our task well and scored two great goals to win it.

“We got ourselves into areas where we can have shots and when you do that, eventually they are going to go in. We have had games this season where we have had twenty-five-plus shots and not scored. There were not too many on target tonight but the ones that were, were special.

“That’s clean sheets in three out of our last four games and Radek [Vitek] has made a wonderful save. It’s moments of brilliance which win you games at both ends of the pitch. The word at half-time was belief, we have to believe we are going to win this game and we showed that.”

The U’s will have to watch out for a couple of players who could cause threats. One of them is Jack Nolan [pictured below]. The forward has been impressing at the Wham Stadium this season managing eleven goals and four assists in twenty-nine league outings.

However, attacking threats will not only come from strikers. Defender Brad Hills who joined Accrington Stanley on loan from Norwich City at the start of the season has three goals and one assist to his name in thirty League Two appearances.

Last Time We Met

Joe Taylor’s effort on fifty-seven minutes was enough to secure a victory for the U’s at the Wham Stadium on 28th October 2023.
