U's boss aiming to build on the positives from Saturday

13 February 2024

Colchester United boss Danny Cowley is hoping to build on the positives of Saturday afternoon when his team host Grimsby Town at the JobServe Community Stadium.

Danny Cowley was disappointed to see his side lose out to a last-minute winner on Saturday against an in-form Harrogate Town side, but has insisted that his team were more than a match for the play-off chasers.

The U’s put in a dominant first half performance, but failed to make their pressure count, with the hosts bagging the only goal of the game in second half stoppage time. Nevertheless, the Colchester United boss is hopeful his side can get something from the game against the Mariners.

“We did so much right in that first half [vs Harrogate], with 76% possession and twenty shots on goal – a real dominance in terms of expected goals as well. But we need to be more clinical and ruthless in the periods where we dominate games. For us, the learning was clear: what we did really well in the first half, we need to do for longer, we need to play for ninety minutes.

“The great thing for us was the learning was so clear, because you look at the first half performance in terms of dominating the ball in the attacking half, we did.

“Now, we just have to sustain that for longer and that’s the challenge for the group. We are a team that is growing.”

Speaking on the challenges that Grimsby will present, Danny said: “We know Dave Artell well. We know his teams always like to dominate the ball, they like to control possession and play through the thirds. You go back to his best teams at Crewe, they played with a real rhythm and fluency, and asked you a lot of questions against the ball. It will be a good test for us.”
