U’s back in action after two-week break

25 January 2024

Colchester United will take on Morecambe in their twenty-ninth Sky Bet League Two clash of the season on Saturday 27th January at the Mazuma Stadium (KO 3pm).

The U’s will be back in action for the first time since January 13th when they played out a 1-1 draw against Bradford City in Danny and Nicky Cowley’s first match at the JobServe Community Stadium.

The new coaching duo have now enjoyed a two-week break that allowed them to get more of their ideas across to the players, who will be determined to get out on the pitch and secure the first win of the Cowley era.

The Opposition

Standing in the way of that is a Morecambe side, which currently sits mid-table having amassed thirty-seven points from twenty-six matches.

The Shrimps are twelve points ahead of the U’s and have played two less games in the 2023-24 campaign so far.

Just like Colchester, Morecambe have picked up some good form recently and are unbeaten in their last three league matches.

But, since appointing Ged Brannan [pictured below] as their manager in late November, the Shrimps have played nine league games winning just two of them, drawing four and losing three.

Last time out, however, Brannan’s men ran out 2-1 winners over MK Dons thanks to a ninety-second minute goal from Charlie Brown.

Speaking after the game, Morecambe’s manager said: “It was a tough, tough game. We had a good game plan. We let them play in front of us. In the end we caught them on the break and got away with it.

“In the end, all the lads were great today – there wasn’t a bad player on the pitch.

“Everyone worked their socks off blocking shots and doing all the hard stuff and going with their runners and it was a great win.”

Brannan has had to rebuild his squad this month, bringing in six players with the club’s previous five loanees all departing.

The most notable of those departures being Michael Mellon [pictured below] who scored thirteen goals in twenty-two league appearances for Morecambe in the first half of the season.

Nonetheless, five out of the six new faces were involved in the Shrimps' win at the Dons last weekend with Ged Garner and Archie Mair starting, along with appearances off the bench from Gwion Edwards, Brandon Barker and Kayden Harrack.

Last Time We Met

Despite going down to ten men after thirty-six minutes, Morecambe left the JobServe Community Stadium with three points after a 3-1 win on 7th October 2023. After going 3-0 down, the U’s managed to get a consolation goal through Cameron McGeehan with seventeen minutes to go.
