Colchester United will welcome Crewe Alexandra to the JobServe Community Stadium for the last game of the 2023-24 season on Saturday 27th April (KO 3pm).
The U’s still need a point to guarantee survival in League Two, following their defeat to Doncaster Rovers on Tuesday night. However, Danny Cowley’s men have a favourable goal difference, having scored three more goals than Sutton and conceded one less.
Nonetheless, Crewe are also in desperate need of points as they find themselves amidst a play-off battle with a draw guaranteeing a semi-final spot.
The Railwaymen sit on seventy points after forty-five matches but have struggled with form recently.
Following a strong start and a decent middle of the season, the Cheshire-based side dropped off slightly and have only managed two wins in their last eleven matches – losing six and drawing three.
Last time out, Crewe were defeated by Wrexham 3-0 in their last home clash of the season. Speaking after the loss, manager Lee Bell said: “I’m bitterly disappointed to lose at home again as we had looked much better and with a lot more energy.
“It was a very even game but then there was a flash-point in the first half which was absolutely ridiculous and I’m quite kind to referees."
He added: "But, we’ll go to Colchester, and myself and the players will meet the challenge head-on and make sure we don’t come off the pitch with any regrets.”
The U’s will have to watch out for a few players who have performed well for Crewe across the season. One of them is forward Elliott Nevitt who has fifteen goals and two assists to his name in forty-two appearances in League Two this season.
Danger will not only come from Railwaymen’s strikers, but also from defenders with experienced centre-half Mickey Demetriou contributing to fourteen goals in forty-five league outings (eight goals and six assists).
Last Time We Met
The U’s succumbed to a 2-1 defeat at Alexandra Stadium on 23rd September 2023 with Crewe scoring both of their goals in the first eight minutes. Samson Tovide then got one back for Colchester in the second half but the equaliser never came.
