Match Preview | Barrow (A)

330-mile trip up north awaits

8 March 2024

Colchester United will travel over 330 miles to face Barrow in their next Sky Bet League Two clash on Saturday 9th March (KO 3pm) – the longest away trip of the season.

The U’s will have had eleven days to prepare after their match against Stockport County was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch at the JobServe Community Stadium.

This means that Danny Cowley’s men are unbeaten in their last three matches, securing three 1-1 draws against Accrington Stanley, Sutton United and most recently Salford City.

And they will be hoping to extend this unbeaten form when they take on Barrow at the SO Legal Stadium on Saturday afternoon, aiming for all three points.

The Opposition

The Bluebirds will be hoping to remain in a play-off guaranteeing place following the weekend’s action.

Barrow currently occupy the sixth spot with fifty-six points and two games in hand over fifth MK Dons with sixty-one points.

Pete Wild’s men have recently had a seventeen-day break enforced by postponements due to waterlogged pitches. Before that, they succumbed to three painful defeats in a row, including a 5-3 loss to Salford City.

Since their return to action, Barrow faced fellow promotion chasers Gillingham, and secured a vital 2-0 victory that propelled the Bluebirds up the table, while sending the Gills down to ninth.

Speaking after the win over their top-seven rivals, Wild said: “It has proved the work we have had to do on the training ground over the last two weeks have proved dividend. It’s allowed us to work on things tactically that we needed to be better at.

“The cornerstone of our season has been how we’ve defended. Over the course of a season some teams will figure you out and you have to be better at what you do.

“Sometimes that break can be a hindrance, but it looks like it’s helped us. With the way the lads have taken the information on board over the last couple of weeks, it looks like it’s really done us a favour.

“We’ve been talking over the last couple of weeks about the fans wanting you to go forward all the time, but the ball gets turned over a lot in League Two.

“It was nice to build some sustained possession that allowed us to push the opposition back. That was capped off by two belting goals.”

One of those goals was scored by Emile Acquah [pictured below] who is likely to be a handful for the U’s defenders come Saturday afternoon. The twenty-three-year-old forward has nine goal contributions (six goals and three assists) to his name in thirty-two league appearances.

Plenty of goals also come from midfield and defence for the Bluebirds with the likes of Kian Spence and Niall Canavan having eighteen goal contributions between them.

Midfielder Spence has managed to find the back of the net six times and has six assists in thirty-three league games this season, while experienced defender Canavan has three goals and three assists to his name in thirty-four league matches.

Last Time We Met

Despite going ahead thanks to Cameron McGeehan’s effort, the U’s succumbed to an undeserved 4-1 defeat with three very late goals setting the scoreline at the JobServe Community Stadium following Jayden Fevrier’s sending off after eighty-four minutes.
