Colchester United Community Foundation:Leading the Change for Sustainability

23 March 2024

Square Images406.jpgExciting changes are happening at the Shrub End Community and Sports Centre, as Colchester United Community Foundation takes bold steps towards environmental sustainability. This week, the installation of solar panels has commenced, marking a significant move towards harnessing renewable energy to power our activities and reduce our carbon footprint.

The sight of scaffolding and emerging solar panels symbolizes our commitment to a greener future. By tapping into solar power, we're not only reducing reliance on traditional energy sources but also actively contributing to the fight against climate change. This initiative reflects our dedication to responsible environmental stewardship. This project was made possible by a grant of £40,000 from the Enovert Community Trust, an environmental body that provides funding to community projects through the Landfill Communities Fund.

Angela Haymonds, Trust Manager of Enovert Community Trust, said: "The Trust is delighted to have supported the Shrub End Community and Sports Centre’s project. It's encouraging to see community facilities taking significant steps towards sustainability. The cost savings for the charity are a huge added bonus, enabling them to continue their vital work within the community.”

In addition to solar energy, EV chargers are being installed, offering a convenient and eco-friendly solution for visitors and staff driving electric vehicles. These chargers not only promote the adoption of cleaner transportation options but also align with our holistic approach to sustainability. Together, these initiatives signify our determination to make a positive impact on our local community and the planet.

Renee Varner, Lead of Sustainability at Colchester United Community Foundation, says this around the recent installation, “I am proud to see the tangible steps we're taking towards environmental responsibility at the Shrub End Community and Sports Centre. The installation of solar panels and EV chargers not only showcases our commitment to reducing our carbon footprint but also demonstrates our dedication to inspiring positive change within our community."

The Shrub End Community Sports Ground's journey towards sustainability serves as an inspiration for sports facilities everywhere. Through the installation of solar panels and EV chargers, we're not just enhancing operational efficiency but also setting the stage for a brighter, cleaner future. Join us as we champion environmental sustainability and pave the way for a greener tomorrow at CUCF.
