Tommy Smith wants to build on recent performances.

The U's skipper was instrumental at the heart of the defence alongside Luke Chambers as the U's kept a clean sheet at Bradford City on Tuesday night, gaining an imoportant away point in the process.

Only six teams in League have conceded fewer goals than the U's going into Saturdsay's clash at Walsall, and Tommy praised the whole team for that when he spoke this week.

He also said he was confident that more goals would come at the other end of the pitch, with the U's creating chances with some extremely good attacking play.

"It's always good to get a clean sheet, but it's down to the whole eleven players when we keep them."

"Of course, goalkeepers and defenders are judged on keeping them, and probably enjoy them more than midfielders and forwards, but our job is always made easier if the players are doing their job defensively.

"It was a solid defensive display that we want to take into the Walsall game at the weekend, and if things go right, we can jump up alongside them in the table."

On the attacking side of things, Tommy told us: "Of course we want to score every chance we get, that's not just the forwards or midfield players, it's defenders when we go up for set pieces as well."

"We'd be more worried if we weren't creating any chances at all - but we know we have to be ruthless and clinical, starting on Saturday if possible."

"It won't be easy up tehre, it's another trip for us on the bus, but we'll be ready to go and will do all we can to be level on points with them after the game."
