Colchester United will know that just a point will guarantee them their place in the knockout stages of the Bristol Street Motors Trophy, when they host Peterborough United this evening (7:30pm KO).

Although Matty Etherington’s side sit bottom of the standings, with Cambridge and Spurs U21s already completing their three games, the U’s have the opportunity to progress with a draw.

There is still a slim chance that Colchester can top the group, but they will have to put at least four goals past Posh without reply – such a scenario would see the U’s win Southern Group D on goal difference.

It a chance for Etherington to further get to know his squad, and maybe an opportunity for some fringe players to show the new Head Coach what they can do.

The Opposition
The only team to qualify from the group so far, a point would satisfy Peterborough’s table-topping ambitions in Southern Group D.

Darren Ferguson’s side will be coming in to the contest fresh after having a free weekend from the international break. Their last match was an eight-goal thriller, drawing 4-4 on the road at Salford City – a game that could only be decided with a penalty shoot-out, that Posh edged 5-4.

In the Bristol Street Motors Trophy, the League One side have been comfortable winners against Cambridge United and Spurs U21s, accumulating six points from 2-0 and 3-1 victories respectively.

Former U’s man Kwame Poku was on target in the win against Tottenham, with Peterborough having five different goalscorers in the competition: Emmanuel Fernandez, Ricky-Jade Jones, Jadel Katongo and Ephron Mason-Clark.

Last Time We Met

The U's haven't met Peterborough United in a competitive fixture since April 2016 - an encounter to forget for Colchester losing 4-1 at home. Jon Taylor, Andrew Fox, Shaq Coulthirst and Marcus Maddison were all on the scoresheet for the visitors, with George Moncur bagging the U's goal.
